When using Mozilla Firefox, to view the html coding for web pages I click on View and then Page Source.
A Notepad page comes up with all the coding on it for that web page.
That is exactly what I expected. :(

But when using IE6, to view the html coding for web pages I click on View and then Source.... and that brings up my Notepad page where all my Notepad txt files are listed.
There is no sign of any web page code anywhere. :(

Is that something I have caused somehow? Or something buggy with IE6?
Is it something easily fixed?

Try going to...

Internet Options > Programs > HTML editor

and choose your editor (Notepad). Save.

Let me know if that helps or not.

I did that and OMG, my computer crashed!
Even the three finger salute didn't restore it to life.
It just does that every so often if I leave it on and don't play with it.

Well, I got it back up again and discovered it had indeed saved Notepad as my html editor before it hung, but the same thing happens... click on Source and up comes my list of Notepad txt files. :(
No change at all.

But it's no big deal because I can always use Firefox instead.
I just thought if it was a simple matter of twitching my nose...
Maybe not. :(

Look in the folder...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\

and see if there is a file called "notepad.exe"

I searched the web (for "missing notepad.exe") and it appears that a missing notepad.exe is not uncommon. It seems to be most commonly associated with a virus. But it is possible that the file becomes corrupt for some other reason.

You might try searching your Windows CD for notepad.exe and restore the file to its proper place (on my PC it is C:\WINDOWS\system32\).

I've since found others getting exactly the same result with IE6.
I have never had a virus, etc, on this computer and my WinXP was a new installation, not from another computer, although I did later download SP2 from the MS website.
Thanks for your help and advice. I will do that very soon.
But isn't it odd that Firefox does the job properly when that file is missing?
Or maybe it isn't so odd... :(

Firefox doesn't open html source in Notepad by default. IE does.

By the way, do yourself a favor and check out this little text editor which I started using last week.

For the last 2 years I have used VIM (in easy mode).

Having syntax highlighting makes coding much easier.
